The Fourth Imam - Hazrat Ali ibne Husain(a.s.)

"The first of them (after Imam Hussain(a.s)) is Ali, the master of worshippers and the ornament of My Auliya in the past." (Hadees-e-Lauh)

Early life-Imam Zainul Aabedeen (a.s) was born on 15th jamadi-ul-awwal, 37A.H two years prior to the martyrdom of Imam Ali(a.s). His (a.s) mother was Shah-e-Zanan, the daughter of Yazdagird bin Shahrayar bin Khosro, a Persian King. Her name was later changed to Shahrbano. His (a.s) father was Imam Hussain (a.s) the lantern of the source of guidance. At the age of 23, He (a.s) faced the most tragic event of His life i.e. the event of Karbala.

Event of Karbala- By the will of Allah, Imam Sajjad (a.s) became seriously ill at the time of the event of Karbala, which prevented him from taking in the battle. His(a.s) Imamat commenced from the noon of Aashura, 61 A.H. From the 11th Moharram, 61 A.H.  the caravan of Imam (a.s) was forced to undertake a journey along with surviving women and children of the martyrs of Karbala, He (a.s) tried His best to unveil the ugly leadership of Yazid. Imam (a.s) speech in the court of Yazid manifested His exalted character inspite of the fact He had to bear mental and physical tortures and hardship. Imam (a.s) in His comprehensive speech praised Allah and introduced the progeny of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s) and the valuable service rendered by them in the way of Islam. The speech created such an atmosphere that it provoked the people against Yazid ( may Allah curse him). To defuse the tension, Yazid ordered a Muezzin to call out Azan to silence Imam (a.s). However Imam (a.s) after each and every sentence of Azan gave such a remarkable commentary, which resulted in increased disgrace of Yazid. Imam (a.s) during 34 years of Imamat passed through the reigns of Yazid ibne Moaviya, Moaviya ibne Yazid, Marwan ibne Hakam, Abdul Malik ibne Marwan and Walib ibne Abdul Malik.

Life after Karbala-  Imam (a.s) adopted two methods to fulfill the duties of Imamat. The first method was that He concentrated on the training of the people individually or collectively through the medium of supplications. The Book 'Sahifa-e-Sajjadiya' is a compilation of the supplications of Imam (a.s) through which He (a.s) trained people. Another important work of Imam (a.s) was the treatise, 'Resalatul huquq'. It is a collection of individual and social rights of the Muslims in different aspects of the society. The second method adopted by Imam (a.s) was to keep alive the heart rendering memories of Karbala. Imam(a.s) from time to time reminded the people about the tragedy of Karbala. He cried loud whenever He saw an animal slaughtered. In an emotional atmosphere He reminded the people about the cruelties of Bani Ummayah.

Generosity and Martyrdom- It is reported from Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s) about the generosity of His father, "He would go out in the darkness of the night carrying a bag on His back. He would come to a door and knock on it. He delivered food from His bag to anyone who opened the door. He used to keep His face covered when helping the poor, lest they recognize Him". His attitude towards the people was very gentle. When He heard somebody speak ill of Him, He would not get angry but would say, "If whatever you said about me is true, may Allah forgive me and if whatever you said about me is false, then may Allah forgive you". At last by the order of Walid ibne Abdul Malik (may Allah curse him) Imam (a.s) was poisoned on 25th Muharram, 95 A.H. He (a.s) was buried in Jannatul Baqi, Madina.

Importance of Ziarat e Aashura

The Ziyara is best read under the sky facing Kerbala. Our 5th Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) told his companion Alqama bin Muhammad that who so ever recited this Ziyara would get the thawaabs of having gone to Kerbala to perform the Ziyara of Imam Hussein (as)
The Ziyara is followed by 2 rakaats salaah and a dua known as Dua e Alqama which the 6th Imam used to recite after Ziyarat e Ashura.

Shaykh Husayn Nuri in his book "Najmuth Thakib" writes that there was a person called Syed Ahmed Rushid who was on his way to Hajj with two companions.

It was winter and one night there was snow and ice accompanied by strong winds.

Syed Ahmed got separated from his companions.

He says he was trembling with fear and cold as it was a place where people often looted.

Suddenly he saw a person with a shovel freeing the tree branches which were burdened with snow.

The man greeted Syed Ahmed saying "Assalamu Alaykum Syed Ahmed! Where are you going?"
Amazed at the person knowing his name he said he was on his way to Hajj but had lost his way.
The man told him "Alayka bin Nafela! Nafela! Nafela!"
Syed Ahmed prayed his Maghrib and Isha salaah finishing each with its Nafela.
He saw the man again who asked him, "Have you not gone yet?"
Syed Ahmed replied "No!"
The man said, "Alayka bil Jamia! Jamia! Jamia!"

Syed Ahmed says that I did not know Ziyarat e Jamia by heart but that day I could recite it as though I had memorised it.
The man told him, "Alayka bil Ashura! Ashura! Ashura!"
Syed Ahmed recited Ziyarat e Ashura and Dua Alqama. The man then mounted on his horse and took him to his caravan and the companions he had been separated from.
As he parted he said to Syed Ahmed, "REMEMBER ZIYARAT E ASHURA, THERE IS NO GREATER GIFT THAN IT."

Muharram When Skies Wept Blood

You know that it is almost the definition of Muharram that this is the month of wail and cries. Imam Hussain (a.s) along with His (a.s) companions were martyred mercilessly in this very month. Shias around the world commemorate this event  in this particular month. Muharram gives back the firmness of faith to shia muslims with its arrival. This is the only  month whose arrival is greeted with tear and it is bid farewell with pearls of cries. Since this month has arrived use this month as best as possible and give your pursa to Imam Mahdi(a.t.f.s) of His(a.s) grand father. Oh Imam accept my salutation  for savior of Islam, Leader of Islam, Hero of Islam Hussain Hussain Hussain.

Music-Most Unstoppable Satanic Instrument Created

Today when we see the world, Music has became a new trend for the people it includes people of all categories childrens, young, old, rich, poor etc.The growth of industries like hollywood, bollywood who are the heads of music industry  are promoting Music among the people and are having great impact on them because of the hype, media support, and star value they have.Today when we open a T.V  on every next channel we see a music song, music programme or something related to Music. After seeing this some questions comes to my mind 1. Why is so much promotion given to Music? 2.Is Music a need of the people in 21st century?
3.Is there any benefit in music? 4. Are people having so much time that they waste it by continuously listening to music? or is there an hidden agenda behind promoting Music.let us analyse Music according to Islam.

Prohibition of Music
The Holy Prophet (S) has also said,
“The Almighty Allah has sent me as a mercy to the worlds, to guide the people. And He ordered me to eradicate the playing of flute and other instruments of music, all games of vice, idol (worship) and all practices of the days of ignorance.”
(Mustadrak ul-Wasa’il, Chapter 79)

Why Islam prohibited Music?
Islam has prohibited all things which have effects on human both physically and spiritually. when we see Music it has effects on both physical and spiritual growth of man.

EFFECT OF MUSIC ON NERVOUS SYSTEM
Music creates vibrations in the body and these are conveyed to all the parts of the body through the nervous system. As a result of this, indigestion occurs. Music affects the heart in such a way that the heartbeats become irregular. The blood pressure goes awry. All such ailments make a person permanently ill. Consequently, even modern medical science, in spite of its astonishing progress, fails in such a situation. Sometimes, the music is so intense that the listeners lose their sanity. They become dumb and various kinds of mental diseases occur. In places where music is more prevalent, we find that there are more neurotic illnesses. It is for this reason that more mental hospitals are to be found in Europe and America.

In one tradition Imam Jafar Sadiq(a.s) said
“If drums and cymbals are played at one’s house for forty days, Allah will impose a satan by the name of ‘faqandir’. The satans will infiltrate into every cell of the person’s body. With the spread of this evil, the person loses all sense of dignity and self-esteem. He will then not care as to what he says or what is said about him. Then, this satan blows into this person. As a result, he becomes utterly shameless. So mush so that he is not concerned or affected even if his women are dishonoured.” It is usually observed that the people in whose homes music is played with regularity either using musical instruments or by radio or cassettes are absolutely shameless. In one question i asked why music is given so much promotion in this age, the answer is  nothing but fulfillment of a portent about last age.

Music and the Last Period of Time
The traditions concerning the signs of the last stage before the Zuhūr of our Imam (a.s.) mention music:
“And you shall see that music will be so prevalent that no one will dissuade others nor will he find in himself the need to do so. And you shall see that music would be openly played even in the two sanctuaries (the city of Makkah and Madinah).”
(Mustanade Naraqi)
This is what we see in the present age where obscene music is openly played in the markets, on the streets, in shops and houses and even cars and no one bothers to prevent it!

Thus Music has only harm to human beings there is no benefits in it.Islam has warned us from one of the biggest deceiver "The Dajjal" and his biggest weapon will be Music.Islam has also given us glad tidings of the coming of  Imam Mahdi(a.t.f.s) and from narrations you know that weapon of muslim is his piety, aloofness from sins, truthfulness etc.Now to Muslims around the world who claim that they are highly pious and there is no match of them in Imaan but they also listen to some Music, they should decide within themselves either be a weapon of Islam and leave Music or continue this lifestyle of yours which makes them nothing but followers of Dajjal it is just like working hard to build the house all the day and at night destroy it with our own hands.say no to Music and join hands with the army of Imam al-Mahdi(a.t.f.s).The only answer to this unstoppable instrument of Satan is to follow Allah's religion of Islam, the sayings of Prophet Mohammad(s.a.w.s) and His divine Imam(a.s).

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's historic speech in UN assembly sept 2011

Iranian President Mr."Mahmoud Ahmadinejad" addressed the UN assembly for the second time on September 22nd 2011.his speech started with praising Allah(s.u.b.t), His noble prophets and our master HolyProphet(s.a.w.s) and His progeny, he also prayed for the good health and reappearance of Imam of our time Imam Mahdi(a.t.f.s).

In the early part of his speech he raised points about the problems world is facing today, he spoke about natural disasters like floods in Pakistan and urged the world governments to give their helping hands to countries affected with natural disasters.

The middle and most important part of the speech dealt with the problems cause by arrogant governments in the world, and it was a hard pill to digest for the oppressor so they rushed out of the auditorium as if the fire caught their asses.he continued and started speaking of problems common masses faced in the past and ended on current problems we are facing, while continuously asking one important question, "who is responsible for all these problems?" some of the questions raised by him were, who colonized the world for 400 years?, who caused world war 1&2 which led to the misery of billions of people?, who used 911 attacks as a means to attack Afghanistan and Iraq?, who used Holocaust as a means to create Zionist regime in the middle east?, clear headed people, peace loving people know the answer of these questions.

What I like most in this speech of Mr President is that he became voice of oppressed, common man, peace loving people around the globe and these are the signs of a great and just leader, he spoke without fear about things he feel is wrong and my opinion is that the world should adapt to his sayings to solve their problems.

In the latter part of his speech he raise a question that despite all the efforts to promote peace there is no peace in this world, he asked what is the solution of this problems?, and he gave a very good answer by saying that if we look in past all the problems of this world were solved by the Almighty Allah(s.u.b.t) and today we need a leader , a guide from Allah(s.u.b.t) to put an end to our misery.he gave the glad tidings of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi(a.t.f.s) and Jesus christ (peace and blessings be upon him) which eventually will lead mankind to happiness and joy. At last he send salutations to love, justice and harmony and thanked all the people, with this ended the historic and the best ever speech of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

We pray to lord that we get more leaders of this qualities, and we with our own eyes are able to see the golden era of Imam Mahdi(a.t.f.s), O Allah shower peace and blessing upon our master Prophet Mohammad(s.a.w.s) and his Progeny.

Facebook raises teenage drugging

Researchers say teenagers who often use social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace are at higher risk of drinking alcohol, smoking and substance abuse.

A study of 1,037 US teenagers aged 12 to 17 and over half of their parents suggested that social network users were five times more likely to report smoking, three times more likely to drink alcohol and twice as likely to use marijuana compared to those who were not networking.

The study also suggested that about 70 percent of the pariticipants used social networking sites on a typical day, reported researchers at the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse of Columbia University.

Results showed that 26 percent of teen networkers reported drinking alcohol, 10 percent said they smoked tobacco and 13 percent confirmed using marijuana.

"The results are profoundly troubling," the researchers wrote in their report. "This year's survey reveals how the anything goes, free-for-all world of Internet expression [and] suggestive television programming ... put teens at sharply increased risk of substance abuse."

The study further showed that seeing photos of other adolescents or children drinking or lighting up a joint on social networks makes these behavior more acceptable for teens.

Findings revealed that 40 percent of teens were exposed to such images, half of them before they were 13 years old. These kids were also more able to procure weed or prescription drugs and four times more likely to smoke up.

Experts, however, say the new findings do not prove that social networks cause harmful behaviors and addiction and that many other factors can be responsible for addictive behavior in teens such as parental involvement and how much spare time the adolescents have.

The results also revealed that 89 percent of the interviewed parents did not think social networking sites increased the likelihood of drug use for teens, while 87 percent thought the same about alcohol consumption.

"Parents should be looking at what their kids are watching on television and, secondly, what they are watching on social networks," said Joseph Califano Jr., founder and chairman of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse.

"Parental engagement is a key factor to lowering teen substance abuse risk, as are frequent family dinners, religious services and consistent messages," he added.

"We know from 16 years of surveys and lots of other research that for better or worse parents have more influence over their teen's risk of substance abuse than anyone else, and it is important for parents to send a consistent and unified message to their teens about drugs and alcohol."

Ziyarat-e-Arbaeen

Imam Hasan Askari (a.s)  said that it is among the signs of momineen to recite Ziyarat-e-Arbaeen.

After 17 years of death … Ayatollah Qazwini dead body remained fresh

HOLY CITY OF KARBALA, Iraq: On Thursday May 12, 2011, Jamadi Al-aakherah 8, deceased Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Kadhim Al-Qazwini, son-in-law of late Ayatollah Sayyed Meerza Mehdi Al-Husseini Ash-Shirazi, was laid to rest in the Shiraziah tomb in the holy Husseini shrine compound in the holy city of Karbala.

Large number of clerics, scholars, Husseini speakers, religious scholars and mo’minin attended the funeral.

The funeral began from the tomb of Al-Allamah Ahmed bin Fahd Al-Hilli marched towards the holy shrine of Abi’l Fadhl Al-Abbas (a.s.) where holy ziyarah was recited then the funeral culminated at the holy hrine of Al-Imam Al-Hussein (a.s.) where he was buried.

Sayyed Al-Qazwini was born in the holy city of Karbala, completed his religious education in Karbala hauzah. He wrote many books; a series of unique books titled ‘minn al-mahd eelal lahd’ about the life of Ahlil Bayt (a.s.), and similarly a writing ‘Al-Imam As-Sadeq (a.s.) consisting of 50 volumes.

He had died 17 years ago on 15 Jamadi Al-Aakherah, was buried amanatan (as a trust) in husseiniyah az-Zaynabiyah for people of Karbala in the holy city of Qom implementing his wasiyah (will) to transfer his dead body after it to holy Karbala.

Then after 17 years have been passed, on Jamadi Al-Aakherah 5, his dead body was taken out from the grave to transfer to holy Karbala.

Surprisingly, during the taking out process his dead body was safe and fresh as if he was died right now; even his coffin cloth was undamaged. Similarly the book ‘Fatimah toz Zahra minn al mahd eelal lahd’ which was put on his chest according to his will while he was buried in the grave, was safe and secure.

When Ayatollah Sayyed Muhammad Sadeq Ash-Shirazi attended his funeral he said: the reason that the body of Sayyed Al-Qazwini remained safe and secure even after 17 years is that he was mottaqi (one who preserves his self), he spent his life in the way of Allah and fourteen infallibles from the progeny of Prophet Mohammad (s).

Dua al-Iftitah

Du' al-iftitah was taught by or twelth Imam (a) for Shi'as to recite every night during the month Ramadhan, The Du'a is excellent for moulding man's attitude towards his Creator as it discusses many aspects of the wretchedness of the human being, and the grace of Allah.

The Sermon Given By The Prophet (s) On The Last Friday Of Sha'ban On The Reception Of The Month of Ramadhan

O People !

"Indeed ahead of you is the blessed month of Allah. A month of blessing, mercy and forgiveness. A month which with Allah is the best of months. Its days, the best of days, its nights, the best of nights, and its hours, the best of hours. It is the month which invites you to be the guests of Allah and invites you to be one of those near to Him. Each breath you take glorifies him; your sleep is worship, your deeds are accepted and your supplications are answered. So, ask Allah, your Lord; to give you a sound body and an enlightened heart so you may be able to fast and recite his book, for only he is unhappy who is devoid of Allah’s forgiveness during this great month. Remember the hunger and thirst of the day of Qiyamah (Judgement) with your hunger and thirst; give alms to the needy and poor, honor your old, show kindness to the young ones, maintain relations with your blood relations; guard your tongues, close your eyes to that which is not permissible for your sight, close your ears to that which is forbidden to hear, show compassion to the orphans of people so compassion may be shown to your orphans. Repent to Allah for your sins and raise your hands in dua during these times, for they are the best of times and Allah looks towards his creatures with kindness, replying to them during the hours and granting their needs if he is asked...

"O People! Indeed your souls are dependant on your deeds, free it with Istighfar (repentance) lighten its loads by long prostrations; and know that Allah swears by his might: That there is no punishment for the one who prays and prostrates and he shall have no fear of the fire on the day when man stands before the Lord of the worlds.

"O People! One who gives Iftaar to a fasting person during this month will be like one who has freed someone and his past sins will be forgiven.

Some of the people who were there then asked the Prophet (s): "Not all of us are able to invite those who are fasting?"

The Prophet (s) replied: "Allah gives this reward even if the Iftaar (meal) is a drink of water."

"One who has good morals (Akhlaq) during this month will be able to pass the ‘Siraat’...on the day that feet will slip...

"One who covers the faults of others will benefit in that Allah will curb His anger on the day of Judgement...

"As for one who honors an orphan; Allah will honor him on the day of judgement,

"And for the one who spreads his kindness, Allah will spread His mercy over him on the day of Judgement.

"As for the one who cuts the ties of relation; Allah will cut His mercy from him...

"Who so ever performs a recommended prayer in this month Allah will keep the fire of Hell away from him...

"Whoever performs an obligator prayer Allah will reward him with seventy prayers [worth] in this month.

"And who so ever prays a lot during this month will have his load lightened on the day of measure.

"He who recites one verse of the holy Quran will be given the rewards of reciting the hole Qur’an during other months.

"O People! Indeed during this month the doors of heaven are open, therefore ask Allah not to close them for you; The doors of hell are closed, so ask Allah to keep them closed for you. During this month Shaytan (Saten) is imprisoned so ask your Lord not to let him have power over you."

Awaiting for Imam Mahdi(a.s)

THE HOLY QURAN SAYS

"And say to those who do not believe that you act as much you can. We are also trying. You all await and surely we all are awaiting."
It is an open challenge for the enemies, that let them make their best efforts. In the light of this challenge can anyone say that awaiting implies sitting idle and remaining oblivious ? Or awaiting means to remain always alert and defeat enemies on every front. Of course, it necessitates that a believer should never exult on his strength but should always rely on Allah. Because reliance in Allah gives victory to weaklings over their stronger adversaries.

Imam Mohammad Baqir (A.S.) said:

"If you act on our advices and teachings and remain in the same conditions, then whosoever dies before the advent of our Qaem (A.S.) will attain martyrdom."

(Beharul-Anwar, Vol. 52, Chap. 22)

Imam Jafar Sadiq (A.S.) said :

"The one who desires to be among the companions of Hazrat Qaem (A.S.), then he must wait, adopt piety and behave courteously. If he dies in such a condition before the advent of Qaem (A.S.), then his reward will be similar to the one who attains his (Qaem's (A.S.)) era. Hence strive vigorously, await his arrival congratulations to you all for your relentless awaiting".

(Ghaibat-e-Nomani, Chap. 11, Hadith 16)

While the first tradition calls for complete emulation ofAhle-Bait (A.S.) so that human thinking and beliefs may not be distracted from the right path the second tradition exhorts for adopting piety and doing good, so that even in the field of practice, their should not be any aberration. The following tradition further clarifies that awaiting does not mean remaining idle and careless. It never purports mere verbal claim without practice but it signifies endless efforts and incessant endeavors as Hazrat Mahdi (A.S.) himself says :
"Then all of you must do such deeds which draw you nearer to our love and affection. And refrain from such acts which evokes your anger and displeasure"

He is the true awaiter who always seeks to please his Imam (A.S.). His every effort is directed at achieving the invaluable pleasure of Imam (A.S.) and it is but evident that the pleasure of Imam is in abiding by the tenets of Islam and not in its sacrilege. It is a command for us and our Imam has encouraged us and has instilled enthusiasm in us through these words :

"We are not negligent of your affairs and are not forgetful of your remembrance. Had it been so, then terrible calamities would have struck you and your enemies would have destroyed you. Fear Allah, strengthen your hands, so that we may relieve you of the tribulations that have afflicted you"

Awaiting is the best deed for us during the period of ghaibat,we should remember our Imam in the heart of days and in the darkness of night, our heart should never be devoid of his(a.s) love because with his(a.s) love we would attain elegance. This is the holy month of Shaban, soon would come the blessed night of 15th Shaban when his(a.s) feet first touch this earth, what more of a blessing can we get from Allah(s.u.b.t) that we are allowed to witness one more 15th Shaban, many who got this blessing last year are not so lucky this year, but if Allah wills we will get another chance and we should use this night to get close to Allah( s.u.b.t),to our beloved Imam(a.s),and we should promise our Imam that for your love we would remove every bad thing in our character and replace it with the flower of  good taught by Ahlulbayt(a.s).

Sha'ban-the month of Prophet

Sha’aban is a month of high excellence and is dedicated to the Leader of the Prophets (PBUH). He used to keep fasts during this month and join it with the month of Ramadhan.

He used to say, "sha'aban is a month dedicated to me.whoever keeps one fast during my month will definitely go to heaven".

It has been reported from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s) that on the commencement of this month, Imam Zainul Abideen (a.s) would gather his companions and address them, “O my companions, do you know which month this is? It is the month of Sha’aban about which the Holy Messenger (PBUH) used to say that it is dedicated to him. So keep fasts during this month in the love of your Holy Prophet (PBUH) and to attain closeness to your Creator. By Allah in whose hands is my soul, I have heard from my father, Hussein ibn Ali (a.s), that he had heard from Commander of Faithful (a.s), that whoever keeps fast during Sha’aban in the love of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and to attain closeness to Allah will become a friend to Allah and on the Day of Judgment will be close to Allah by His grace and Paradise will be assured to him.”

FIRST DAY

The Holy Messenger (PBUH) said, “By the one who has appointed me to Prophet Hood, whoever on this day indulges in the evil or sin will have surely clung to one of the branches of the “Tree of Zaqoom” which will pull him to the fire of Hell.

DAILY AMAAL

1) Recite 70 times
I seek forgiveness of Allah, and, repentant, beseech Him.

ASTAGFIRULLAAHA WA AS-ALUHUT TAWBAH

I seek forgiveness of Allah who is “There is no God save He”, the Beneficent, the Merciful; the Ever living, the Eternal, and I turn repentant to Him

ASTAGHFIRULLAAHALLAD’EE LAA ILAAHA ILLA HUWAR RAHMANO RAH’EEMUL H’AYYUL QAYYOOMU WA ATOOBU ILAYHI

2) Give Alms/Charity in God’s name.

Imam Sadiq was asked “What are the best deeds that should be done in Sha’aban?” The Imam (a.s) answered, “Almsgiving and seeking forgiveness are the best deeds in Sha’aban. Verily, if anyone of you gives alms in Sha’aban, Almighty Allah will breed that alms in the very same way as you breed your small camels. Hence, these alms will be as huge as Mount Uhud on the Resurrection Day.”

3) On every Thursday Fasting is recommended & Recite two Rakaat Namaz.

In every Rakaat, after the recitation of Surah Hamd (The Opening), recite Surah Ikhlaas (The Purity)100 times. After the Salaam recite Salawat 100 times .اللّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ In this respect, a Hadith reads that the heavens decorate themselves each Thursday in Sha’aban and the angels pray Almighty Allah, saying, “O our God: (please do) forgive him who observe fasting on this day and respond to his prayers.”

Dua’a for Last Day(s) of Sha’aban

Imam Reza (a.s) is reported as saying, “If one observes fasting on the last three days of Sha’aban and attach it to the obligatory fasting of Ramadan, Almighty Allah will reward him as if he has observed fasting for two consecutive months.”

In the rest days of Sha’aban, you may repeat the following supplication very much for Almighty Allah saves many people from Hellfire on account of the sanctity of this month:

اللّهُمَّ إنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ غَفَرْتَ لَنَا فِيمَا مَضَى مِنْ شَعْبَانَ

alluhumma in lam takun ghafarta lana fima madha min Sha’aban

O Allah: If You have not forgiven us in the past days of Sha’aban,

فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا فِيمَا بَقِيَ مِنْهُ

faghfir lana fima baqiya minhu

(Please do) forgive us in the rest of it.

Surely this is the month of seeking closeness to Allah(s.u.b.t) we should do everything that pleases Him and refrain from those acts which makes Him angry.we should fear from His anger.I pray to Allah(s.u.b.t) that me and all the momineen uses this month in best of ways which is beneficial to us,ILAAHIAMEEN.

Imam Muhammad Taqi(a.s)

Wiladat of Imam Muhammad Taqi (a.s) mubarak to all momineen
Read this short article and test yourself how much you know about your Imam.

Name: Muhammad bin Ali.
Titles: At-Taqi, Al-Jawad.
Kuniyya: Abu Ja'fer.
Father: Imam Ali Ridha (A.S.)
Mother: Sabika (also known as Khaizarun).
Birth: 10th Rajab 195 a.h. Madina.
Death: 29th Dhulqa'da 220 a.h. Baghdad. Buried in Kadhmain.
His Parents & Birth
He was the only son of Imam Ali Ridha (A.S.) The Prophet (S.A.W.) had said:

"My father be sacrificed on the mother of the 9th Imam who will be a pure and pious Nubian."
Imam Musa Kadhim (A.S.) had told one of his companions that his daughter-in-law (Sabika) would be one of the most pious of women and to give her his salaams. She came from the same tribe as the Prophet's wife - Mary Copt who bore the Prophet his son Ibrahim (who died in infancy).
Imam Muhammad Taqi (A.S.) was born when his father was 45 years old. Till then Imam Ali Ridha (A.S.) had constantly been taunted that he had no children. When the 9th Imam was born, a brother of Imam Ali Ridha (A.S.) was angry because he would lose out in inheriting the Imam's property and in his jealousy spread a rumour that Imam Ali Ridha (A.S.) was not the father. He was eventually proved wrong by a person who could tell parentage.

Childhood
The 9th Imam was 5 years old when his father was called to Baghdad by Mamun Rashid to be his 'heir apparent'. When Imam Ali Ridha (A.S.) was leaving he saw his son putting sand in his hair. He asked why and the young Imam replied that this was what an orphan did.

His titles, life & works
He became an Imam at the age of 9. Mamun Rashid thought that as all the rulers before him had oppressed the Imams and their schemes had backfired that he would try to bribe the Imams. He tried to make the 8th Imam his heir apparent and give him power and wealth but that also backfired.
He now tried to use power and wealth with the 9th Imam again but from a much younger age thinking that he would be able to influence him. His main purpose was also to make sure that the 12th Imam (whom he knew would bring justice to the world) would be from his progeny and therefore intended to give his daughter Ummul Fadhl to the Imam for a wife. Mamun still continued oppressing the family and followers of the Ahlul-bayt (A.S.).
Mamun called the young Imam (A.S.) to Baghdad from Madina and offered his daughter. This infuriated his family (Banu Abbas). To prove to them the excellence of Imam even at a young age he arranged a meeting between Imam and the most learned of men at that time - Yahya bin Athkam.
It was a grand occasion with some 900 other scholars present. Imam (A.S.) was first asked by Yahya:
What is the compensation (kaffara) for a person in Ehraam who hunted and killed his prey?"
Imam replied that there were many more details required before he could answer the question:
  1. Did the Muhrim (one in Ehraam) hunt in the haram or outside?
  2. Did the Muhrim know Sharia or not?
  3. Did he hunt intentionally or not?
  4. Did he hunt for the first time or was this one of many times?
  5. Was he free or a slave?
  6. Was his prey a bird or an animal?
  7. Was it big or small?
  8. Had he hunted by day or by night?
  9. Was he baligh or not?
  10. Was he repentant or not?
  11. Was his ehraam for Hajj or Umra?
Yahya was stunned. He looked down and started sweating.
Mamun asked the young Imam to answer the question, which he did, and then Imam asked Yayha a question which he could not answer. The Banu Abbas admitted defeat and Mamun took the opportunity to offer his daughter in marraige to Imam. Imam (A.S.) read his own Nika (the khutba of which is used today) with the Mehr of 500 dirhams. Imam wrote a letter to Mamun that he would also give Ummul Fadhl Mehr from the wealth of Aakhira. This was in the form of 10 duas which were for fulfilling any hajaat (desires) [Chain of narrators upto Prophet - Jibrail - Allah]* . Thus his title Al-Jawad (the generous one).
* These duas are found in Mafatihul Jinaan (pg 447 - In margin)
Imam lived for a year in Baghdad with Ummul Fadhl. She was very disobedient to Imam. When she found out that Imam had another wife (from the progeny of Ammar-e-Yasir) and that there was also children she was jealous and angry realizing that her father's plan had failed. She complained to her father who also realized that his plan, to keep the 12th Imam in his progeny, had failed. He was enraged and in his rage he drank heavily and went to the 9th Imam's house and attacked Imam with a sword. Both Ummul Fadhl and a servant saw the attack and believed Imam was dead. Mamun on waking next morning realized the consequences of his attack and was thinking of arranging the disposal of Imam's body when he saw Imam well without a scratch on him. He was confused and asked Imam who showed him an amulet which is called Hirze Jawad Imam told him it was from his grand mother Bibi Fatima Zahra (A.S.) and kept the wearer safe from all except the angel of death. Mamun asked Imam for it and Imam gave him one.
Now Mamun was scared and tried a new tactic. He tried to deviate Imam by sending him beautiful girls and musicians. When he realised nothing was working he let Imam return to Madina.
Imam used this time to prepare the masails of Taqleed and Ijtihaad in preparation for the 12th Imam knowing that both the 10th and the 11th Imam would spend most of their lives in prison. He also prepared the people of Madina teaching true Islam knowing that this would be the last time they would be able to receive guidance directly from an Imam for a long time.
Ummul Fadhl continuously complained of Imam to her father who sent her letters back.
Mamun died in 218 a.h. and was succeeded by his brother Mo'tasam Billah. He openly announced that all Shias were not Muslims. He said it was required for people to kill and prosecute Shias, and to destroy property belonging to Shias.
Ummul Fadhl now started complaining to her uncle who was sympathetic to her. Mo'tasam called Imam to Baghdad. He asked Imam to pass judgement of how to punish a thief. Imam said only fingers could be cut as the palms were for Allah (as in Qur'an - it is one of the wajib parts to touch the ground during sajda). As this decision was contrary to the decision of the other 'Ulema' it strengthened the position of the Shias. The other 'Ulema' complained to Mo'tasam.

Death & Burial
With instigation from both the 'Ulema' and Ummul Fadhl, Mo'tasam sent poison which Ummul Fadhl put in Imam's drink and gave it to him. Imam died on 29th Dhulqa'ada at the age of 25 years and is buried near his grandfather in Kadhmain (the 10th Imam gave him ghusl and kafan).

Summary of Imam's Work
It is he who prepared and wrote books for the masails of Ijtihaad and Taqleed which were essential to prepare believers for the ghaibat of the 12th Imam.

Additional Notes
Once when the young Imam was on his way to Baghdad he came across Mamun's party returning from a hunting trip. All the other children on the street ran but the Imam did not.
Mamun asked the young Imam, "Why did you not run away?"
Imam said the road was wide enough for all of them and neither had he committed a sin. Mamun then asked him his identity.
After finding out, he asked Imam what he (Mamun) had in his hands. Imam replied "Allah has created tiny fish in the river. These fish are hunted by the Hawks of the kings and the descendants of the Prophets reveal the secrets".

Imam Baqir (A.S.) - Aajezi Aur Tawaazo

Imam Muhammad Baqir(a.s) Commandments to his Shi‘ites

It is incumbent on those who adopt the doctrine of the members of the House (ahl al-Bayt), peace be on them, to follow these immortal commandments. They should put into effect their bright items to be an example to people. This is the text of his commandments:
O People of our Shi‘ites, listen and understand our commandments and our covenant to our followers. Be truthful in your talk. Fulfill your oath to your friends and your enemies. Help each other with your properties. Love each other with your hearts. Give alms to your poor. Come together in your affairs. Do not cheat nor betray anyone. Do not have doubts after certitude. Do not escape out of cowardice after intrepidity. Do not turn away from the people whom you love. Your desire should not be for the love of other than you nor should your love be for other than you nor should your act be for other than your lord nor should your faith and purpose be for other than your Prophet. Ask for the help of Allah, be patient. Indeed the earth belongs to Allah. He gives it to His servants whom He wants. And the final result is for the pious.”
He, peace be on him, added:
“Indeed, our Shi‘ites, the friends of Allah and the friends of His Apostle, are those who tell the truth when they speak. They fulfill (the promise) when they promise. They pay (the deposit) when they are deposited. They endure with justice when they are forced to endure. They give when they are asked for the obligation. And do justice when they are asked (to do it). Our Shi‘ites are those whose ears do not pass over their knowledge. Our Shi‘ites are those who do not praise those who find fault with us, nor do they make friends with those who hate us, nor do they associate with those who betray us. When our Shi‘ites meet a believer, they honor him. When they meet an ignorant person, they leave him. Our Shi‘ites are those who do not growl as the dog does, nor are they greedy as the crow is, nor do they ask anyone (for alms) except their brothers even if they die of hunger. Our Shi‘ites are those who believe in our doctrine, separate themselves from their beloved ones for us, approach the strangers who love us, and turn away from the strangers who hate us.”
One of those who were sitting with the Imam admired these words concerning the Shi‘ites. Thus, he asked the Imam:
“Where are such as these (people)?”
The Imam replied:
“They are in the ends of the lands. It is they whose livelihood is easy, who are delighted. When they are present, no one knows them. When they are away, no one misses them. When they become ill, no one visits them. When they propose (marriage), no one marries them. When they enter a way, they do not deviate from (it). When the ignorant ones address them, they say : peace. And they pass the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing.”
One of those who were sitting with the Imam blamed the Shi‘ites who were contemporary to the Imam, saying:
“Oh son of Allah's Apostle, what about those who follow you with their tongues while their hearts are contrary to that?”
Thus, the Imam replied:
“The tribulation will bring about droughts against them to destroy them utterly, spites to ruin them completely, and disunion to kill them. By Him Who supported us at the hands of His angels, no one except Allah will kill them at their hands. Therefore, cleave to acknowledgment when you speak (to people). Leave quarreling, for it divides you. Beware, He (Allah) will raise you from the dead before the fixed time. So, your blood will appear, your souls will go, those who will come after you will dispraise you, and you will be an example to the beholders. Indeed the best of the people in action is the one who leaves the people of the world- such as the father, the friend, and the adviser- and associates with his brothers in Allah even if they are Abyssinians or Negroes. No one of the believers will be raised a Negro from the dead. Rather they will be as white as hail. They will be washed with the water of the gardens. They will win immortal Paradise. They will sit with the close angels, and accompany the prophets. No servant is more honorable with Allah than the servant who is rendered homeless for Allah till he meets Allah. Such are our Shi‘ites who are the warners in the earth. They are lamps, signs, and light for those who seek what they seek. They are the leaders of the people of obedience to Allah. They bear witness against those who oppose their summons. They are tranquillity for those who come to them. They are kind to those who follow them. They are generous, forgiving, and merciful. So, such are their attributes in the Torah, the Bible, and the Holy Koran.
“The learned man is from our Shi‘ites when he keeps his tongue, obeys his leaders, shows enmity towards his enemies with his heart, knows their defects, does not show them what is in his heart, looks at their bad deeds with his own eye, and hears their offenses with his own ear. Those who hate his enemies are his friends. And those who love his enemies are his enemies. ”
So, one of those who were present asked the Imam: “May my father and mother be ransom for you, what is the reward of the one whom you have described when he walks peacefully, gets up peacefully, and spends the night protected? What is his rank and his reward?”
Thus, the Imam, peace be on him, said: “The Sky commanded him to be protected, the Earth commanded him to be honored, and the Light commanded him to be believed.”
So, it was said to the Imam:
“What is his attribute in the world?”
He, peace be on him, replied: “When he is asked (for alms), he gives. When he is invited, he accepts. When he seeks (something), he obtains (it). And when he supports an oppressed person, he strengthens him.”
I think that no commandments were reported on the authority of the Imams of the pious such these commandments that raise man to the level of the righteous and the pious. For they summon man to cleave to high moral standards and to refrain from bad manners. If Moslems put them into effect, they would be the lords of nations and leaders of people.
Indeed these commandments are among the treasures of Islam. They contain the aspects and essence of Islam. They denote that Islam has good, mercy, and guidance for all people. So, the Moslem must follow them throughout his life.

Sheikh Murtadha Ansari(r.a)

The late Sheikh Murtadha Ansari, in the company of his brother, travelled from Kashan to Mashhad and then arrived in Tehran where he eventually settled down in Madershah madrasah in which he shared a room with one of the students.
One day, the Sheikh gave the student some money so that he could buy some bread for both of them. When the student returned, the Sheikh noticed that he had brought some sweetmeat too, which he had placed on top of the bread. Turning to the student, he said: “From where did you get the money to purchase the sweetmeat?”
“I borrowed it,” replied the student.
The Sheikh took only that portion of the bread that had no sweetmeat on it, saying: “I shall not eat the sweetmeat for I am not sure I may live long enough to repay the debt!”
Years later, when that student came to Najaf, he went to the Sheikh and asked: “Now that you are at the head of the Hawza aIlmiyyah and the Marjaa of the entire Shiaa world, tell me, what did you do that Allah granted you this great success?”
“It is because I did not have the courage to eat even that portion of the bread which lay beneath the sweetmeat, but you had the audacity to eat the bread as well as the sweetmeat!” replied the Sheikh.

Hospitality Of Imam Zainul Abideen (a.s)

Farazdaq, the poet says that he visited Imam Zainul Abideen (a.s) one day, to find some guests there. The Imam ordered that food be laid for them. Some bowls containing meat and broth were placed before the guests and a bowl of roasted grains was also placed there. This was his regular diet. After the tragedy of Kerbala he never ate anything delicious. The Imam was content only with roasted grains. Farazdaq says, “When the Imam started eating, I began to weep and said: O son of Allah's Messenger. Why don't you take some of the meat and broth?” The Imam began to weep and did not reply. When the guests had eaten to satiation he said to them by way excuse, “I could not serve you the type of food I desired to. I hope you would forgive me. The tragedy of Kerbala has made us living corpses.”

Imam Raza reportedly said a famous Ahadith here which is known as Silsilat al-Dhahab

"The Kalima of 'La ilaha illallah' is My fort, and whosoever says it will enter My fort, whosoever   enters My fort is safe from My punishment."

This hadith is known as the Golden chain hadith. This is because each member of the chain was a Masoom (infallible). The people of Nishapur began reciting the Kalima and thought that His Holiness talk was over, but to their amazement the Holy Imam Raza (as) added the following words to what he had previously stated:

"But all this depends on some conditions, and I am considered to be one of those conditions".

This historical and the most famous Hadith Qudsi is called "Silsilat al-Dhahab". Imam Raza (as) confirms that worshipping God will be counted as a perfect procedure when it is based on the obedience of the immaculate Holy Imams (as). This historical statement of Imam Raza (as) implied the presentation and assertion of the Imamat (socio-religious leadership) of His Holiness.

Meeting with imam(a.s)

Haaj Sayyed Abthai narrates an incident of a person who was cured of heart disease in Masjude Sahebuz Zaman, The incident is recorded in his book ‘Mulaqaate Imame Zamana (a.s.)’ (Meetings with Imame Zamana (a.s.)).

The incident as narrated by this person (name withheld as per the request of the narrator) is as follows.

“I stayed quite far from Masjide Sahebuz Zaman (a.s.) and had not visited this mosque for at least 3 years. I had been a heart patient and despite my best efforts for treatment, my condition remained the same and did not improve.

One day, I had come to this area for some work. As I was leaving, I heard the call for prayers and it occurred to me that I should pray my namaz at the prescribed time and then leave from here. Consequently, I came to the mosque to offer my prayers.

As I completed my prayers, I became aware of the presence of a person to my right. He conveyed his salaams to me and I replied. He asked me if there was any betterment of the condition of my heart, at which, it came to my mind that maybe this person is from my area and is therefore aware of my situation – maybe he knows me, but I had not seen him earlier and did not know him.

I replied in the negative and told him that my condition is the same and there is no respite from the pain. He then put his hand on my stomach and pressed it firmly. His touch was as if someone had put soothing water over a raging fire and was very reliving. At that very instant I was cured of the pain in my heart.

I asked the reason for his being present in this mosque. His reply was surprising – “This is not Masjide Sahebuz Zaman(a.s.)." I asked him, “ Why not?” He replied, “This palce is just related to me, that’s all.”

At that time, the importance of the words did not sink into my mind and I occasionally turned to look at him. But for a moment, I reflected on the pain in my heart and his words – “This place is just related to me, that’s all” – and the thought came to my mind that may be this person is my Master – Hazrat Baqiyatullah (a.s.). When I turned to look at him this time, I realized that he was not there any more.’

After this incident the author writes that this person became his close friend and as long as he knew him, he did not suffer from any problems of the heart.

This incident teaches us that Imame Zamana (a.s.) is aware of our difficulties and he helps us – whatever be the intensity of our problems. Imame Zamana (a.s.) cures his lovers from fatal diseases.

Abbas ibne Ali(a.s)

The shifting sand dunes of Karbala were smeared with blood. Near one of wash dunes, on the bank of Alkoma, lay the prostrate figure of a youth with blood gushing out from innumerable wounds. The crimson life-tide was ebbing fast. Even so, it seemed as if he was anxiously expecting somebody to come to him, to be near him before he breathed his last. Through his starched throat he was feebly calling somebody. Yes, Abbas was anxiously expecting his master to come to him before he parted with his life, as he had come to the side of all his devoted friends who had laid down their dear lives for him and in espousing his cause.

It is said that before a man's death al the past event of his life pass before his mind's eye in a flash-back. In his last moments Abbas was experiencing this. He was seeing himself as a child in Medina following Husain with a devotion which was considered unique even for a brother. He was seeing the events of that hot and sultry day in Kufa when his illustrious father Ali was addressing a congregation in the mosque and he, as a child, with his characteristic devotion, was looking at the face of his beloved brother watching him intently so that he could attend to his wishes on an instant command. Seeing from the parched lips of Husain that he was feeling extremely thirsty, how he had darted out from the mosque and returned with a tumbler full of cool, refreshing water and in the hurry to carry the water as quickly as possible to quench the consuming thirst of his dearest brother, how he had spilled water on his own clothes. He was recalling how this incident had made his illustrious father stop in the midst of his speech, with tears rolling down his cheeks at the sight of his young son all wet with water. He was remembering his father's reply to the queries from his faithful followers as to what had brought tears in his eyes, that Abbas who had wetted his body with water in the process of quenching Husain's thirst would in the not too distant future wet his body with his own blood in attempting to quench the thirst of his young children. He was vividly seeing the scene on the 21st Ramazan, way back in 40 Hijra, when his father mortally wounded, was lying on his death-bed and entrusting his children and dependents to the care of the his eldest brother, Hasan - all except him. Seeing that his father had commended all but him to the care of Hasan - how he, a child of 12, had burst out into uncontrollable tears. His father, on hearing him sobbing, had called him to his side and given his hand in Husain's hand with the words:

Husain, this child I am entrusting to you. He will represent me on the day of your supreme sacrifice and lay down his life in defending you and your dear ones, much as I would have done if alive on that day.

How his father had turned to him and affectionately told him:

Abbas, my child, I know your unbounded love for Husain. Though you are too young to be told about it, when that day dawns, consider no sacrifice too great for Husain and his children.

He saw before his mind's eye that parting with his aged mother Fatima in Medina. How she had affectionately embraced him and reminded him of the dying desire of his father to lay down his life in the defense of Husain and his dear ones.

A faint smile of satisfaction flickered for a brief moment on his parched lips a smile of satisfaction that he had fulfilled his father's wish; that he had performed his duty for which he was brought up. It just flitted for a moment and vanished as other scenes came before his mind's eye. He was re- living the events of the night before. He was seeing Shimr stealthily coming to him; and talking to him about his ties of relationship; about the protection he had been promised for Abbas by the Commander of Yazid's forces, only if he would leave Husain and go over to Yazid's camp; about the promises of riches and rewards that he would get; how he had spurned the suggestion of Shimr with the utmost disdain to the chagrin of that servile minion who had sold his soul for a mess of pottage. How he had scared away that coward by his scathing rage saying:

You worshipper of Mammon, do not think that Abbas will be lured by your tempting offer of power and pelf. If I die in fending my master, Husain, I shall consider myself the luckiest person. O coward, remember that valiants die but once. Nobody is born to live eternally. By betraying my master, you have betrayed the Prophet, whose religion you profess to follow. On the Day of Judgement you will be doomed to eternal perdition. I am ashamed to own any relationship with you. Had it not been for the fact that you have come here unarmed, I would have given you the chastisement you deserve for your impudence in asking me to become a turncoat.

How that wretch had scampered from there seeing him roaring like an enraged lion. The thought of that unpleasant interlude contracted his brows. Or was it the excruciating pain he was suffering on account of the deep gashes he had all over his body?

Yet another scene passed before Abbas's eyes - Sakina leading 42 children, each with a dry water-bag. The children were shouting as if in chorus

Thirst, consuming thirst, is killing us.

Sakina coming to him and putting her dry water-bag at his feet and saying to him:

O uncle, I know you will do something to get water for us. Even if you can bring one bag full of water, we can wet our parched throats.

He could see that thirst, aggravated by the scorching heat of the desert, was squeezing their young lives out of them. The sight of these youngsters had moved him more than any other soul-stirring events of that faithful day. How he had picked up the water-bag with assurance to Sakina that he would go and bring water - God Willing.

How he had taken Husain's permission and marched out of the camp with a sword in one hand, the flag in the other, and the bag on his shoulder, with the children following him in a group up to the outer perimeter of the camp. How Husain had repeatedly requested him to avoid fighting as much as possible and confine himself to the task of bringing water!

His thoughts switched over to the events that had preceded his fall from the horse. With the object of procuring water for his dear little Sakina, he had charged on the enemy who held the river banks. He had run through the enemy ranks like a knife through butter. Again this surging onslaught the cowards could not stand and had run helter-skelter shouting for protection. For a moment it seemed as if Ali, the Lion of God, had descended from heaven. In no time Abbas was near the rivulet. He had jumped down from the horse and bent to fill the water-bag. When it was filled to the brim, he had taken some water in his cupped hand to drink and satisfy his killing thirst. But, on second thoughts, he had thrown the water away. How could he drink water when Sakina and the children were still withering without it? How could he be so callous as to forget that his master Husain had not had a drop of water since the last three days. He had turned to his horse which had been let loose so that it could satisfy its thirst. The animal had been intently looking at its master as if to say:

I too am aware that, so long as our master and his children remain without water, our thirst cannot be quenched.

With the water-bag filled he had jumped into the saddle with one thought uppermost in his mind, to get the water to the anxiously waiting children as quickly as possible. Seeing him galloping towards the camp of Husain, the enemy had turned. Somebody had shouted from the enemy ranks that if Husain and his people got water, it would be difficult to fight them on the battlefield. Though it was an uneven fight, he fought them with valour which was so characteristic of his fathers Though he was thirsty and hungry, he charged on them and scattered them. The mercenaries of Yazid were running like lambs in a fold when charged by a lion. Seeing that a frontal assault on a man so brave was not possible, they had resorted to a barrage of arrows. When arrows were coming form all sides, Abbas had only one thought in his mind, how to protect the water-bag than his life. Seeing that Abbas was preoccupied with this thought, one treacherous foe, hiding behind a sand-dune, had rushed out and dealt a blow on his right hand and cut it off. In a flash Abbas had transferred his sword to his left hand and the standard he was bearing he had hugged to his chest. Now that the Lion of Ali was crippled, the foes had found courage to surround him. A blow from an enemy's sword severed his left arm. The odds were now mounting against him. He held the bag with his teeth and protected the flag with his chest pressed on the horse's back. Now the paramount thought in his mind was to reach the camp somehow or the other. A silent prayer had escaped his lips:

Merciful Allah, spare me long enough to fulfill my mission.

But that was not to be. An arrow had pierced the water-bag and water had started gushing out of it. Was it water that was flowing out of that bag or the hopes of Abbas? All his efforts had been in vain. After all Sakina's thirst would remain unsatisfied and all her hopes would be frustrated. The enemies who had made bold to surround him, now seeing his helpless condition, were now gathering thick round him. One of them came near him and struck mortal blow with an iron mace. He reeled over and fell from the horse.

He tossed on the burning sand with excruciating pain. He felt that life was fast ebbing out but his wish to see his master had remained unfulfilled. With one last effort, with all the strength that was left in him, he shouted:

O my master, do come to me before I die.

As it in answer to his prayers he felt some footsteps near him, Yes, his instinct told him that it was his lord. His one eye had been blinded by an arrow and the other filled with blood and so he could not see. But he felt his master kneeling down beside him, lifting his head and taking it into his lap. Not a word was said for a few seconds because both were choked with emotion. At last he heard Husain's voice, a half-sob, half-muffled cry:

Abbas, my brother, what have they done to you?

If Abbas could see, would he have recognized his master? With back bent and beard turned white and hoary, on hearing the parting cry of his beloved brother, Husain's plight was such that nobody could have recognized him - such was his transformation. Abbas was now feeling the loving touch of his master's hand. With effort he muttered:

You have come at last, my Master. I thought I was not destined to have a last farewell with you but, thank God, you are here.

With these words he put his head on the sand. Tenderly Husain lifted his head and again put it on his lap, inquiring why he had removed it from there.

My Master, replied Abbas, the thought that when you will be breathing your last, nobody will be there to put your head in a lap and to comfort you, makes me feel that it would be better if my head lies on the sand when I die, just as yours would be. Besides, I am your slave and you are my master. It is too much for me to put my head on your lap.

Husain burst into uncontrollable tears. The sight of his brother, whose name was to become a byword for devotion and unflinching faithfulness, laying down his dear life in his arms, was heart-rending.

Abbas was heard to whisper softly:

My master, I have some last wishes to express. When I was born, I had my first look at your face and it is my last desire that when I die, my gaze may be on it, too. My one eye is pierced by an arrow and the other is filled with blood. If you will clear the blood from my one eye, I'll be able to see you and fulfill my last dying desire. My second wish is that when I die you may not carry my body to the camp. I had promised to bring water to Sakina and, since I have failed in my attempt to bring her water, I cannot face her even in death. Besides, I know that the blows that you have received since morning have all but crushed you and carrying my body to the camp will be heart breaking work for you. And my third wish is that Sakina may not be brought here to see my plight. I know with what love and affection she was devoted to me. The sight of my dead body lying here will kill her.

Husain sobbingly promised him that he would carry out his last wishes added:

Abbas, I too have a wish to be fulfilled. Since childhood you have always called me master. For once at least call me brother with your dying breath.

The blood was cleared from the eye, one brother looked at the other with a longing lingering look. Abbas was heard to whisper:

    My brother, my brother

and with these words he surrendered his soul to his Maker: Husain fell unconscious on the dead body of Abbas with a cry:

O Abbas, who is left to protect me and Sakina after you?

The flow of Furat became dark as winter and a murmur arose from the flowing water as if to protest against the killing of a thirsty water-bearer on its banks.
